From the moment we had the ability to mutter our names, we were prompted to state who we were. For many, the response came easily, but for others, it took a myriad of experiences, failed attempts at life, and unrealized dreams to muster up the courage to announce their presence; who they are. The road to self-acceptance and self-love can be misguiding. We may at times allow the world to dictate to us our identities and beliefs, and as a consequence become enthralled by bouts of fashion and fads, that displaces our representation of self. We may lose our footing if we are not securely grounded, or if we are easily perturbed.

Titles and accolades while they are indicative of our passions and accomplishments, do not in any way exclusively represent our true selves. We are unique individuals and our knack for self-expression varies tremendously. We become our surroundings, associations, experiences, and entrenched values. We may even find ourselves mirroring the values of others in an attempt to blend in, so as to prevent any judgment that may surface. We are in a constant state of rebuttal as we try to define who we are.

Although being ourselves come naturally, to pretend is easier. We are smart and accomplished, and not easily offended; we are confident, down-to-earth, assertive, and bold; things we tell ourselves to demonstrate that we are owning who we are. We rarely have deficiencies, our potentials are limitless, skyscrapers have nothing on us. We are the best in our field, our competition has not been birthed as yet. We stand alone in a world of uncertainty, yet our prowess and valor outshine the masses. You never hear about our insecurities and failings. They are non-existent. We are only a tad bit shy of perfection; but is this really who we are.

Truth be told, we are an amalgamation of our experiences, our beliefs, our customs, our traditions, our ambitions, our goals, our passions… Expressing who we are is complicated. We are powerful beyond measure; we are perfectly imperfect. We may have setbacks, trials, and struggles that may befall us. We may be twice defeated, torn down, or broken, but we are the sum of our parts. We are unapologetically geniuses and should not be caged by labels. Because remaining true to ourselves in a world that is constantly changing is life’s greatest stroke of genius.
